The break

A gap year is a student privilege! Take advantage of it! The opportunity to take a break for 6 months to a year does not come along very often in life! Apply until June 18th for a start of your gap year in September, We will keep your place at the university and you can use this time to do a thousand things: civic service, linguistic stay, internship in a company, humanitarian trip, entrepreneurial or cultural project, au pair... There are many ways to make the most of this break! Read the student testimonials at the bottom of the page!

The gap year brings a lot of experience and maturity to students! What counts is to travel a long way and to bring back a lot of enriching experiences in your luggage. Literally, it's 6 months or a year of openness to the world around us. A gap in your studies allows you to take a step back in time, both personally and professionally. This time off should allow you to add "lines to your CV", to differentiate yourself; you must be able to value it and you will be able to do so if it reinforces your CV and the coherence of your career! HRDs and recruiters appreciate this voluntary approach!

What is it exactly?

The Césure is a temporary and voluntary suspension of studies which aims to acquire professional or personal experience in France or abroad. It can be used to carry out an entrepreneurial, social or cultural project, to work in a company, administration or association.

At Aix-Marseille University, if you wish to take a gap year to develop your business creation project, Pepite Provence accompanies you and you benefit from a student entrepreneur status.

The duration of a gap year can vary from a minimum of one university semester, i.e. an indivisible period of 6 months, to a maximum of two consecutive university semesters. It must begin at the same time as an academic semester.

It may begin as soon as students register for an undergraduate course and must end before the last semester of the course.

Only one gap year per study cycle is possible:

  • Cycle 1 (Bachelor's degree course spread over the first three years of university studies),
  • Cycle 2 (master's cycle spread over the 2 years following cycle 1)
  • Cycle 3 (doctoral cycle spread over the 3 years following cycle 2)

For Master's students, the gap year can take place before/during the Master's 1, before/during the Master's 2.

Only students in initial training can benefit from a gap year.

This can be :

  • A baccalaureate student who wishes to suspend his or her studies before undertaking higher education
  • A student enrolled in a higher education course who wishes to suspend it temporarily,

During the gap year, the student remains registered administratively in his or her home institution, but is not attached to his or her course of study.

Formalization of the gap year.

An agreement is signed by the higher education institution and the student specifying the terms and conditions of support and guaranteeing the integration of the bachelor, the reintegration or the re-enrolment of the student at the end of the gap period.

Next dates for students:

* September 2021 for one or two semester(s): apply in the spring campaign between 23/03 to 18/06/2021 at 4pm.

I did my gap year between my Master 1 and my Master 2. At first, I was a bit reluctant to leave the school system for a year. I was an au-pair in Berlin for 2 months, then I joined a Berlin start-up for an internship for 3 months and then I did a second internship of 6 months in France. I have always been able to justify my choice for this gap year. These two internships allowed me to better understand in which direction I wanted to go but also to facilitate my integration within a new M2 and within a company to carry out my apprenticeship year. I was able to acquire a lot of knowledge and skills and additional experiences that will be beneficial to me. I have no regrets about this gap year, quite the contrary!

I would advise anyone who wants to improve their language skills to go to a foreign country. I met a lot of people and had the opportunity to travel a lot. My gap year was a real success on all levels! If you have the opportunity and the means, I advise you to do it! You just have to know how to organize your gap year request with the university, so that when you come back, you don't have to worry about re-entering the university.

My post-baccalaureate studies at university did not allow me to have an idea of the professional world of business, I needed experience to help me make my choice of direction. So I did a gap year between my first and second masters. I found an internship in a start-up, where I ended up as a customer service manager. During the gap year, the company then kept me on a fixed-term contract and on a work-study programme for my Master's degree. It was a great experience both from a professional point of view because I quickly found myself with a lot of responsibilities and also in relation to my studies because the courses given during my Master 2 had much more meaning for me. I strongly recommend the gap year, especially to students who need something concrete. A gap year gives students the opportunity to have a prolonged experience in a company, can help to clarify one's orientation choices as well as to appreciate the courses differently afterwards.
