Master 1 Computer methods applied to business management (MIAGE)

The objective of the MIAGE Master's degree is to train executives in the field of Information Systems Engineering with a dual competence in Information Technology and Management. Graduates must be able to understand all the internal processes of the company in order to ensure their computerisation: strategic management, commercial management, financial management, human resources management, production management and logistics. When they do not develop IT solutions themselves, they act as an interface between the development teams and the "business" teams. This positioning must also place them in a favourable position when it comes to meeting a customer need as a service provider.

There are two standard career paths that provide specialization in :

• the field of Business Intelligence ("Data and Decision Engineering", I2D);
• Multi-scale Information Systems ("Extended Information Systems Engineering", ISIE): IS of a company in a city or a connected territory.

Whatever the course, the graduate must be able to develop a complete solution that meets a need for computerization within his or her organization or for a customer requirement. He/she is therefore able to manage, pilot and control an IT project in all its technical and organisational dimensions.

Professionalisation is a very strong dimension of MIAGE. In-company apprenticeship represents more than half of the overall training time through internships or work-study professionalization periods under an apprenticeship or professionalization contract.

In a complementary way, the training provides for year-long projects during which students, in autonomous teams, have to respond to missions entrusted by the teaching team or industrial partners.

Knowledge to be acquired

In accordance with the requirements of the MIAGE national reference system, the two years of training are built on two main pillars: IT and Management.
The IT part is itself structured in three main areas that are to be mastered:

• IT development: design, modelling, development paradigms {Object, Web, Event, Client/Server, Components}, Quality and Tests;
• Data processing: MERISE method, Relational Model, RDBMS, SQL/NoSQL, Warehouse, Extraction, Decisional and Big Data;
• IT project management: Requirements gathering and analysis, Life cycles, Quality, Risk, Cost control, Optimization, Project portfolio management.

As far as management is concerned, the knowledge addressed covers :

• Enterprise Strategy;
• Financial Management and the main Economic Models of Business Development;
• Human Resources Management and Management Control;
• Management, Audit and Quality of Information Systems.

In a complementary way, the legal aspects surrounding the activity of an IT project manager are also part of the knowledge to be acquired.
The theoretical knowledge to be acquired represents an important volume in order to ensure these future managers the long-term adaptability required in the face of frequent and rapid changes in the digital business.

Targeted skills

The MIAGE Master's degree, over the 2-year curriculum, aims at acquiring the technical and managerial skills necessary for the success of IT projects as a whole. Depending on the course, the graduate will be able to :

• design and develop applications to optimise an Information System or meet a customer requirement;
• organise data to optimise its use within applications;
• organize and exploit data and knowledge for decision support;
• manage an entire IT project;
• design or re-design an Information System to align it with the business and to
• Corporate Strategy ;
• designing and implementing BIG DATA solutions for the benefit of the company's business lines;
• adapting an Information System to the new application needs of connected cities and territories;
• design and deploy application solutions adapted to the needs of digital marketing;

Structure and organization

The MIAGE branch in Aix-Marseille is ISO-9001 certified.
The MIAGE Master's degree is offered on a work-study basis under a professionalization contract and an apprenticeship contract in partnership with the CFA Epure and the PACA Region.
The first year of the MIAGE Master's degree, common to both courses, is open on the Aix and Marseille sites. The course follows an alternating rhythm for all:

• Usually, the week is divided between the course and the host company.
• The first 4 or 5 weeks of each semester are spent entirely in training.
• All training vacation periods are spent entirely in the company.
• The period starting at the end of the course (usually the first two weeks of April) until the following school year is spent entirely in the company.

The second year takes place in Marseilles, on a work-study basis (under an apprenticeship contract as well as under a professionalization contract, except in very special cases) for both the ISIE and I2D model courses, according to the following rhythm:

• Usually, the week is divided between the training course and the host company.
• All training vacancies are spent entirely in the company (July/August included).
• The work-study calendar may exceptionally provide for 1 to 2 weeks spent entirely in training.

The entire master's programme has an hourly volume of close to 900 hours. This large number of hours - in the case of a work-linked training course - is explained by the need to acquire dual skills and by the desired level of requirements in both disciplines.

Who can apply?

The preferred profile is that of students holding a Bac+3 degree with a dual competence in Computer Science and Management. Exceptionally, particularly deserving candidates from IT fields may also be admitted if they have another form of practice or experience in management and professionalization.

The public of continuing education (employees on training leave, job seekers,...), VAE, VAP is also eligible, after examination of the file, if they present sufficient prerequisites (skills, level of diploma and motivation) to succeed within the MIAGE Master's degree.

Access to the MIAGE Master's degree is mainly based on completion of the MIAGE Computer Science Degree or the MIAGE Management Degree. For the first year of the MIAGE Master's degree, the number of students is limited and access is subject to selection from among the applications submitted. Direct entry into the second year of the Master's degree is also possible but is less common, given the requirements in both disciplines, computer science and management.

Professionalization in the MIAGE Master's programme involves placing more than 100 students each year on work-study contracts and as many on internships, which requires very close links with the local entrepreneurial fabric and the territorial institutions involved in the training (PACA Region, CFA EPURE Méditerranée).

The MIAGE Master's degree improvement council includes most of the national NSEs but also representatives of industrial companies with a strong presence in the department (AIRBUS, STMICRO, CMA-CGM) or local startup managers, which also demonstrates the links between the training and the industrial ecosystem. The MIAGE Master's degree also benefits from national agreements signed by the ESNs with all the MIAGEs in France.

Depending on the origin of the students, they will be oriented during the first semester of M1 towards an EU harmonization in order to reinforce the management skills of students coming from IT fields and, conversely, to reinforce the IT skills of students coming from Management fields. This organization allows the development of the dual competence in Computer Science and Management which is the strength of the MIAGE profile.

The framework agreements signed by the Faculty of Economics and Management with foreign universities allow students who are not on a work-study programme to spend the first semester of the Master 1 abroad on an exchange programme.
